    Marathon Haven Peninsula Harbour

pebble beachFounded in the late 1800's on the strength of the lumber industry and railway construction, the discovery of large deposits of gold a decade ago stimulated a second boom of renewed growth for this community.

Marathon has no official marina services. A maodock provides day-time access for shallow-draft (3' or less) boats. In addition there is a public launch ramp that can accommodate shallow-draft boats. The open harbour offers a good place to drop anchor for lunch or re-supply stop-overs. A short walk or taxi ride will bring you to a downtown area which features a growing assortment of services including restaurants and shopping malls, a pharmacy, liquor and beer stores and a laundromat.

Enjoy a refreshing dip in the Olympic-sized indoor pool at the Marathon Recreation Complex, catch a show at the movie theatre or play a round at the Peninsula Golf Course. The challenging nine hole course is noted for breathtaking views of Lake Superior. Club rentals are available.

You can tour the Hem lo Gold Mine, explore the sand dunes at the mouth of the Pico River and the polished rocks of Pebble Beach or head out along one of the many hiking trails in the area, including the 12 km Coastal Trail which begins at Cummins Beach and extends to Car den Cove, where Marathon's new marina will be located.
