East of Thunder Bay, the Sibley Peninsula is home to a diverse population of wildlife and regionally rare species of plants. The network of hiking trails of Sleeping Giant Provincial Park is accessible from natural anchorages at Sawyer Bay and Tee Harbour.
Silver
Islet Harbour
Experience the rustic charm of this 19th century mining community
near the tip of the Sibley Peninsula. The Silver Islet Habour
Association is working with the DFO to restore the dock for
the 2020 season. Silver Islet (the island not the community)
is located1 km east of the dock remnants of pilings and shafts
are still visible below the surface recall the years between
1869 and 1884 when fortunes were made and 3millions of dollars
in silver were extracted from a small offshore island. Take
a stroll through the picturesque village where some of the
original cottages have been preserved as private summer residences;
hike to the Sea Lion rock formation or enjoy tea and sandwiches
in the back room at the old General Store. Limited space for
overnight docking is available at the government wharf.
Sawyer Bay & Tee Harbour Havens
Take a trip east across Thunder Bay to the head of the Sleeping
Giant. From the small clearing at Sawyer Bay, or from Tee
Harbour on the south shore, you can access the network of
trails at Sleeping Giant Provincial Park. One route follows
the shoreline around the foot of the Giant, while a shorter
trail takes you to the top for a spectacular view of Thunder
Bay. Or across Black Bay visit Porphyry Island Lighthouse
