    ENVIRONMENTAL TIPS

Here are some useful reminders and tips on how to be a consciencious and more environmentally minded boater.

    • Enjoy cruising Lake Superior's North Shore. Practice environmentally sound boating and camping.

    • Unnecessary noise can be offensive. Slow down to reduce noise levels in populated areas and when other boats or wildlife are near.

    • When you go ashore, practice "no trace" camping. Don't alter the natural surroundings, and leave nothing but your footprints. If you bring it with you, take it back too. Never leave garbage behind at remote Lake Superior harbours or beaches.

    • Reduce the amount of potential garbage you bring on a trip by cutting down on food packaging before your cruise begins.

    • It is illegal to discharge untreated sewage from a vessel. Make use of the increasing number of pump-outs available at North Shore Marinas.

    • Conserve water on board - this reduces pumpout frequency and the burden on sewage treatment facilities, to say nothing of your wallet.

    • When refuelling, fill carefully to avoid blow back, and don't overfill. Leave room for gas to expand in the tank during hot weather. Wipe up any spills.

    • Use a "bilge pillow" to absorb fuel or oil in the bilge. Water will not be absorbed, and cleaner water will be pumped from the bilge into the lake.

    • Slow down near the shoreline, especially in wetland areas. Prop wash can cause shoreline erosion and damage to wildlife habitat and waterfowl nesting grounds.

    • Keep campfires close to the water. After making sure fires are dead out, remove any pieces of foil or debris and pack them out.
